Augusta met her Lord and Savior face to face on February 10, 2019. Augusta was born to Bertha (Wieghat) and Anton Demuth the day after Christmas, 1936, on a farm near Brenham, Texas. Augusta graduated from Brenham High School and Blinn Junior College, Brenham, Texas. In March of 1956, she met the love of her life, Claude Conway Underwood, while he was attending Air Force basic fighter training at Bryan AFB, Texas. They were married on February 3, 1957. After her husband’s retirement from the Air Force they settled in Wichita.
Augusta and Claude’s first son, Tim, was born on December 22, 1957, at Orange County Regional Hospital, Orlando, Florida. After a little over one year they moved to Vails Gate, New York, about ten miles from West Point Military Academy and ¼ mile from General Gate’s headquarters during the Revolutionary War during 1782-1783. George Washington’s headquarters was at Newburgh, New York, about ten miles away. The family bought their first home at Vails Gate. They were surrounded by Revolutionary War history. They were then sent to Barrington, Nova Scotia, Canada, and spent two years at a small radar site on the southern tip of Nova Scotia. Their next assignment was Sacramento, California, where they bought their second home in Fair Oaks, California. A second son, Thomas Daniel, was born on May 13, 1962 at Mercy Hospital, Sacramento, California. Tom died of a heart attack on March 8, 2008. Their next assignment was to Big Springs, Texas, in west Texas. After almost four years they were sent to Wichita, Kansas. When Claude went to the Vietnam War Augusta chose to remain in Wichita while he was there. Claude was sent back to Wichita and they bought their third home. They decided to make Wichita their home and have lived there for forty-six years.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, her only sibling, Henry and his wife Margaret Jo, and son, Thomas Daniel.
She is survived by her husband, Claude Underwood, son, Timothy David and wife, Deborah and daughter -in-law, Lori (Walters) Underwood, grandchildren, Rebekah Lynn (Underwood) and Matthew Pritchard; and twins, Sarah Ann (Underwood) and Coby Spear, Rachel (Underwood) and Tyler Norris, Paul Andrew and Mackenzie (Castle) Underwood, Alyssa (Underwood) and Cody Butts, great-grandchildren, Emma and Sophia Spear, Alexandria and Evelyn Ptitchard, and Thomas John Underwood.
