The Home Going Celebrating the Life of Mr. Johnny Lawrence, 72, of Enid will be held 2:00 P.M. December 14, 2018 in the First Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Garland Hall and Elder Norwood officiating. Burial will follow in the Enid Cemetery. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the United States Army National Guard. Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.
Johnny Bernard Lawrence Sr., better known as Johnny B. was born on April 19,1946 to Andrew and Anna Lawrence in Calvert, TX. (In Johnny’s own words) “We moved to Enid, OK June 19,1959 it was the first year that we saw snow, it didn’t snow in our home town that much, so you can only imagine what that meant to us.” Johnny B was a very kind and gentle soul he never met a stranger and loved being around his family and friends. Johnny graduated from Enid High School in 1964 and upon graduation he enlisted into the military serving during the Vietnam Era and was stationed in North Korea. Upon being honorably discharged from the Army he joined the Army National Guard for a combined total of 32 years. In 2006 he retired from The Oklahoma Department of Transportation in Perry, OK where he was the first African American to hold a supervisory position. Johnny had a love for gardening, fishing and sports. Johnny joined St. Stephens AME Methodist Church at a very young age and he continued to be a faithful member and Exhorter under the leadership of Rev.Garland Hall. On May 01, 2001 he became a Mason member of the Enid Lodge #29. On December 2, 2018 an Angel was dispatched to call into eternal rest the soul of a faithful and dedicated servant. Johnny Bernard Lawrence, Sr., 72, succumbed to a hard-fought battle with lung cancer. He retired after twenty-eight years from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and dedicated a total of thirty-two years to the U.S. Army and the Army National Guard.
He leaves to cherish his memories with his wife of 17 years Tisa Lawrence of Enid, OK; sister Bonnell Fields of Enid, OK; brother Andrew “Sonny “Lawrence (Gladys) of Enid, OK. 13 children Laredo Green (Lee) of Fort Worth, TX ; ShuWanda “Buffy” Bennett of Oklahoma City, OK; Dacia McClendon of Fort Worth, TX; Andre “Ramon” Gissandaner of Enid, OK; LaTonage Kelly (Elijah) of Everett, WS; Fredrick Lawrence of Fort Worth, TX; Shelli Smith of Oklahoma City, OK; Robin Campbell (Danny) of Oklahoma City, OK; Lance Driver (Tammy) of Enid,Ok; Jermaine Atkinson (Rebecca) of Wichita, KS; Akesha Nash (Michael) of Midwest City, OK and Donchelle Ortiz (David) of Enid, OK and one daughter-in law Natasha Lawrence (Johnny d.) of NewYork City, NY. Along with 32 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, cousin and friends. He was preceded in death by both of his parents Anna and Andrew Lawrence; 4 sisters Jimmie-Mae Green, Maudell Graves, Dorine Myles and Pearl Lawrence; son Johnny Bernard Lawrence, Jr. and four grandchildren Michelle, Michael, Ezekiel “Ezzy” Kelly and Journee Lawrence.
