Lou was born February 13, 1931, to William and Mary Bauerle Lass in Beresford, SD and passed from this life December 16, 2023, in Enid, Oklahoma.
He grew up on a farm which was homesteaded by his grandparents in 1872. He fondly remembered attending a one-room school which required a long walk twice a day. In high school, track medals were won in the mile and cross-country races at state meets. He set a record time in the 440-yard dash that stood for many years.
Lou attended college at the University of South Dakota before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force where he was stationed in Oklahoma. He graduated from OU with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He received his Master’s degree in engineering from the University of MN. He also earned the PE (professional engineering) certification. He worked on many aeronautical and aerospace projects throughout his career.
He met his life partner, LaDonna Ballard, in 1951. They were married 67 years. LaDonna and Lou lived in Oklahoma, Minnesota, Arizona, and California. They retired to Enid to be near family and escape the Minnesota cold.
During his lifetime, Lou traveled to 49 states and 13 countries. He was an avid golfer and had a hole-in-one. He enjoyed bridge. In retirement, he entered and won many senior spelling bees as he wanted to prove the old age was wrong – engineers can spell!
He loved being a Grandpa to his one and only grandchild, Sam. Sam and his daughters fondly remember all the time spent with him biking, playing ball, cards, spelling, and memory games. The family enjoyed Wheel of Fortune tournaments.
Lou served in many capacities at First Presbyterian Church of Enid. He was a Stephens Minister, Deacon and Elder and volunteered on various committees and programs (his favorite was the tutoring program).
He is survived by his two daughters, Terri and Marie and her husband David, grandson Sam and nieces and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his wife, parents, and siblings.
In lieu of flowers, Lou requested that memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church of Enid (tutoring program) with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
Condolences and special memories may be shared with the family on-line at WWW.Brown-Cummings.com.
