Mary Jean was born November 22, 1944, in Enid, Oklahoma to Harvey and Frances (Evans) Grimes and passed on to her eternal resting place, Friday, May 6, 2022, and is now on her best journey yet. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, daughter, and friend to all who adored her. She was the oldest of two who grew up on a family farm full of fond memories in the Carrier-Hillsdale rural area of Oklahoma with her brother, Randy Grimes. She was proud to be named after her maternal grandmother, Mary Thelma and her Aunt, Willa Jean. Treasured memories growing up were made with her cousins and wonderful grandparents Mono & Grandpa Earl Evans. Mary Jean attended grade school through high school in Hillsdale, Ok. She was a Christian and a member of the Carrier Congregational Church. She played basketball and was a lefty with the best left-handed layup. Active in the Garfield County 4-H Club, she was awarded the 4-H Hall of Fame Scholarship and her picture hung in the State of Oklahoma Capitol Building. She lived up to the 4-H Club Motto, “To Make the Best Better” - I pledge: My head to clearer thinking, My heart to greater loyalty, My hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world. Of the 5 classmates in her graduating class of 1962, no doubt she was Valedictorian of Hillsdale High School. She attended Oklahoma State University and was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Mary Jean delighted in raising her three daughters, Laurie, Leslie, and Tanna in Houston, TX on the best street with the best of friends on Roos Road. Her girls were her pride and joy and she always let them know that she loved them MORE! Always their biggest cheerleader throughout the countless fun, love, and laughter they had together. She was a devoted and involved mother, a role model and matriarch who lit up the room and was the life of every party. Travel became her passion, and she was a dedicated Travel Agent who lived and loved what she did, especially cruising. Many fabulous trips have now become cherished memories being blessed with the best in the business as our Mom. Specializing in Luxury Cruises at Campbell Travel, Eagle Travel, Voyagers, Thompson Travel, and Sanborn Travel left behind a legacy of friendship and mentorship to an army of friends in the industry who respected, admired and think of her as an icon. Mary Jean loved family gatherings, any type of social outing, cheering on her grandsons in sports, sharing uplifting messages on Facebook, watching basketball, reading, music, Veuve and her margarita on the rocks. Affectionately known as Grandma Mary Jean by her grandkids, she was loved for her warmth, kindness, and great sense of humor, and for her unique beauty - inside and out. Mary Jean had a heart for generosity. Her style was impeccable, and she carried herself everyday with such class, elegance, and grace - characteristics that so many admired about her. Mary Jean was one-of-a-kind and will be remembered for her stunning smile, her infectious spirit, and her beautiful heart which was a prominent part of her everyday charm. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive everyday by her three daughters: Laurie Rice, Leslie Hilberth, and Tanna Hundley, and two son-in-laws, Brian Hilberth and John Hundley. Plus, seven wonderful grandchildren: Evan Rice, Lane Rice, Reid Rice, Blake Hilberth, Brody Hilberth, Brooks Hilberth & Haley Hundley. And many other family members, lifelong friends, and travel industry partners from all over the world. Mary Jean was preceded in death by her brother, Randal Grimes, and her parents, Harvey and Frances Grimes. An intimate family funeral will take place at 10am on Friday, May 20, at the Chapel at Brown-Cummings Funeral Home in Enid, OK. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held in Mary Jean’s honor in Dallas, TX late June. Date and details to follow. The family is grateful for the outpour of love in cards and messages proving that she left a tremendous mark on all who knew her.
