Vivian was born April 30, 1931, to John and Hazel Miller in Clinton, Oklahoma and passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2018, in Enid, Oklahoma.
Vivian attended public schools in Enid graduating from Enid High School in 1949. She attended
Oklahoma A&M College and was a member of Chi Omega sorority. On September 7, 1952, following her
Junior year, she married Donald W. Collins and they were able to graduate together from the School of Business in 1953. Her major was Secretarial Administration and she was consistently on the Dean’s Honor Role.
Vivian worked as a secretary at Vance Air Force Base during the summers while in college and at several other businesses after graduation while Donald was serving in the Army. She spent much of the remainder of her years raising their children and enjoying their grandchildren.
Their first child Jo Lynn was born in 1955. After returning to Enid, Jan was born in 1957 and their third and last child Scott was born in 1961. Vivian was one of the early advocates for healthy eating and made her children eat their veggies before any desert was served. This made for some extended mealtimes.
Vivian was a lifelong Presbyterian and in 1970 was the first female to be elected to the Board of Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church of Enid. She taught Sunday School for the young people including her own for more than 30 years, was a Stevens Minister and was active in the Presbyterian Women’s Association and various prayer groups. In 2012 she became a charter member of the newly formed Westminster Presbyterian Church of Enid.
She was a member of Tau Beta Child Study Club, Jr. Welfare, chapter Q of PEO, Big Band Dance Club, Square Dance Club, Enid Tennis Association, Happy Trails Tennis Club of Arizona and was active in exercise programs at the Enid YMCA for approximately 50 years. She enjoyed many ski trips with family and friends, biking trips through Europe and a flight on the British Airways Concorde from London to New York City. During the period 1998 to 2012 she and Donald spent most of their winters in the warm climate of Arizona.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years Donald Collins of the home; daughter Jo Lynn and Mike Stroup of Albuquerque, New Mexico, daughter Jan and husband Mike Peck of Enid; and son Scott and wife Diana Collins of Naples, Florida; eight grandchildren, Tyler Kent, Dr. Stuart Lisle, Madeline Kerr, Leslie Nelson, Collins Peck, Trey Peck, Nathan Collins and Lauren Collins; and ten great grandchildren.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents John and Hazel Miller.
The family offers special thanks for the wonderful care provided her by the Garland Road and Commons nursing homes and their staffs over the past four years and the special loving care provided by the staff at St. Mary’s Hospital and Hospice in her last days.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Denny Price Family YMCA of Enid, the Alzheimer’s Division of Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation or Hospice Circle of Love with Brown-Cummings serving as custodians of the funds.
