Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

He was born November 27, 1939 to Raymond Otto and Lavina Christine (Rethwicsh) Johnson in Antelope County, Nebraska in the family home and passed from this life on October 10, 2019 in Enid, Oklahoma.

Wendell was a Nebraska farmer at heart and in life, graduating from Plainview High School in 1957. He then joined the United States Air Force, and honorably served in the 307 th Bomb Wing of the Strategic Air Command as an airplane mechanic until 1962. He then moved to Enid, Oklahoma in 1963 where he took a civilian position at Vance Air Force Base before ultimately settling into a 47-year career as an appliance repairman with Durheim’s Appliance. He married the love of his life, Amelia Louise Williams on December 18, 1975 in the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas, Nevada, and they raised four daughters together.

Wendell was proud of working hard, and doing a job well. But it was more than his remarkable work ethic that lead him to spend 25 years working at Durheim’s and Walmart more than 60 hours per week every week.  It was his love of family that motivated him most, and his habit of quietly surprising those around him with thoughtful generosity on every birthday and holiday throughout his life.

Wendell loved to go fishing, dedicated countless hours to gardening and bird-watching, always looked forward to football season, and harbored a particular weakness for ice cream. Wendell had a wonderful sense of humor and an unassuming charm that made it easy to like him, while his tough exterior disguised his overwhelmingly caring heart.

He is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Walker, grandsons Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Benjamin of Allen, TX; Kimberly Haws of Enid; Chantel Wolff and husband Mike, grandchildren Thomas, Tessa, and Katie of Edmond, OK; Wendy Jones and husband Justin, grandchildren Isaac and Jenna of Enid; sister Zelda Cartier and husband Jerry of Bemidji, MN; nephew Jason Cartier of Bowbells, ND; brother Van Johnson of Millidgeville, GA; and niece Ashley Quebedeaux and husband Patrick of Simpsonville, South Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson Marion Wade and granddaughter Tia Ann Williamson, and his wife, Amelia Louise Johnson.

Memorials in his name may be made to Loaves and Fishes with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
